about me
Born and raised in Jamaica, I moved to New York City as a preteen. Within weeks of finishing high school, I joined the Navy and never looked back. My cycling journey started as a spin instructor while living in Virginia and trying to manage my weight. A few years and two kids later, I traded gym bikes and spin classes for a Peloton bike.
During a Peloton class, I noticed some older guys, riding past my house. I wondered if I could do what they were doing? Heck, I wasn’t that old, why not? I took my kids on an inaugural 17-mile ride. My son complained of all sorts of discomfort, my daughter slept and I found a new hobby. Riding outside invigorated me like a spin class but better. With all sorts of endorphins rushing through my body, I wanted to ride further and faster. A few days later, I upgraded from the trusty hybrid to my first road bike.
My road bike journey started on an aluminum bike while pulling my daughter in a 25lb bike carrier. Glute work anyone? I got strong quickly! Unfortunately, in 2017, I was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis and was forced off my bike. From time to time I would look at my bike but couldn't bring myself to clip in, I even contemplated selling it. Then COVID changed everything. In 2020, a friend invited me for an easy 30-mile ride-my first ride in almost 3 years. It was hard but fun. As COVID gripped the world, I gripped my handlebars and rode a few more miles every week. The feeling of freedom, accomplishment, and exhaustion all wrapped into one-I was hooked, again!
In 2021, I joined a race team to try my hand at road and crit racing. I loved cycling but I wasn’t enjoying racing. Mixed emotions compounded by 2 concussions within 6 months-I was not having fun. Then as fate would have it, a scholarship for a gravel race made its way into my inbox. I've been curious about gravel for a while but I didn't see anyone who looked like me graveling and heck, I didn't know where to start. I threw caution to the wind and applied for the scholarship. Luck was on my side and within a few weeks I got my first gravel bike and within two months I did my first gravel race.
Gravel is dirty and hard and FUN! I found my sweet spot and haven't looked back. No two gravel roads are alike, so each gravel event is an adventure, to say the least. In 2022, I joined the gravel racing team Velocio//Exploro. My gravel journey, good and bad, is shared on my Instagram page Msadventurer1.
This page allows me to share more than IG can accommodate. Take a look around and come along for the ride.
